Extractions don’t have to be scary
It is always better to preserve a tooth even for a few years.
Think of your mouth like a game of Jenga. The more blocks that are pulled out the more likely the whole tower will fall over. That is why, here at Sundrive Dental and Implant Clinic, we will do our utmost to save a tooth at all costs.
Similarly, with your mouth, the more back teeth that are removed the less likely the front teeth will last properly. Only when essential will we advise removing a tooth.
Paul McEvoy “I firmly believe that the function of the mouth entirely depends on the retention of as many teeth as possible”. In his 30 years of dentistry, he has performed a tiny proportion of extractions in comparison to typical practitioners. “Looking at my patient group over a 15-year period, their mouths are much healthier and much more functional than those with teeth removed”.
When a tooth is removed, the remaining teeth surrounding, slowly move out of position. When a tooth tilts, it becomes much more fragile and can withstand much less pressure than an upright stable tooth. Even the stable teeth on the opposite side of the mouth begin to suffer as they are unevenly loaded. Within a couple of years, the mouth is functioning at only a fraction of its original capability.
When should a tooth definitely be removed?
Only when it is impossible for a tooth to be repaired by a crown or filling should the tooth be removed. Even with a slight chance of success, we recommend attempting to save the tooth.
“The kids think going to the dentist is a treat now with all the stickers you gave them. No fear of dentists here!”
